Mr and Madam Marquet
Ink on paper signed with the initials lower right. Dimensions: 18.4 x 11.2 cm Pretty intimate portrait of Albert and Marcelle Marquet, whose head rests tenderly nestled on her husband's shoulder. Albert Marquet met Marcelle Martinet in January 1920 in Algiers. She is a blackfoot woman with character. She serves as his interpreter. He is forty-five years old and does not want to commit to a permanent marriage, and yet they will never leave each other. The marriage was celebrated on February 10, 1923 in Algiers, the city of their first meeting. She takes care to give him his absolute freedom, managing the career of her illustrious painter, handling administrative matters, even taking care of his correspondence. They have the taste and the need to adventure. Together, they traveled across Europe, staying every winter in the Maghreb from 1931 to 1938. She accompanied him with deep love until her last breath, on June 14, 1947. She wrote on July 13: “Your last evening, you finished it by reading a few lines from Balzac.”
