Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) was an icon of surrealism, a 20th-century avant-garde movement that sought to unleash unconscious creative potential through art containing dreamlike images. Dali's engravings, paintings, sculptures, films and fantastical texts helped cement the movement's identity. Drawing on psychoanalytic ideas, Dalí created fantastical creatures and landscapes capable of disturbing and amaze. His 1931 painting Persistence of Memory is one of the most recognizable works of art of all time. Dalí was exhibited widely during his lifetime, and his works are in the collections of institutions such as the Tate, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
