Signature of Marcel Masson, known as Antoine Blanchard, lower right.
Marcel Masson is a French landscape painter born in 1910 and died in 1988. He learned drawing in Blois and joined the Rennes School of Fine Arts in 1929. Three years later, in 1932, he went to Paris to the National School of Fine Arts. Recognized by his peers, he obtained, after three years of study, the Prix de Rome in 1935. After the Second World War, he won a prize from the French Minister of Fine Arts and exhibited in the best galleries in Paris. His father calling him back to take care of the family business, he practically abandoned drawing, which he did not resume until 1948. The walls of Montmartre and the suburbs were his favorite subjects. In order to attract an American clientele, he adopted a lighter palette and painted scenes from Paris in the 1900s. By randomly leafing through the directory, he adopted a pseudonym and signed “Antoine Blanchard”; he will then launch into a frenzied production of quality paintings, in a style depicting the Paris of the Belle Époque. Its success was instantaneous and will not be denied.
