Object description :

"School Of The Early 17th Century, Presumed Portrait Of The Miniaturist Isaac Oliver (1556-1617)"
School of the 17th Century, Presumed Portrait of the English Miniaturist of French origin Isaac Oliver (1556-1617) Oil on copper Diameter: 9.5 cm The miniature has some gaps as is visible, cleaning will probably give better readability to the work which is quite dirty. The portrait of the artist is known from the engraving (see photo) and from a self-portrait of the artist kept in the National Gallery (npg4852). The similarities between the works leave little doubt about the person represented. Rare work because apart from that of the National Gallery no portrait of him is recorded to my knowledge. It is probably not a work of his but more certainly of someone around him. He is of French origin, he was born in Rouen but following religious persecution he left with his parents for England where he learned the art of miniature with Nicholas Hilliard.
