"Ascetic Buddha, Bronze, Nepal, 20th Century"
Before achieving liberation Siddhartha Gautama experienced extreme asceticism which brought him to awakening, to his state of Buddha. This bronze from Nepal, from the mid-20th century, is made with great mastery of casting techniques where different materials are combined, bronze, silver, mercury gilding. Finely chiseled, the Buddha is represented seated in meditation on a throne, his face emaciated, his hands clasped in dhyana mudra. The remarkable quality of execution is the work of Newar artists in the Kathmandu valley who still perpetuate today the ancestral know-how that has been renowned worldwide for several centuries. Acquired on site in the 1980s.
