Shapiro later decided to become an artist and left college. He enrolled in evening classes at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in early 1959 to study drawing. Shapiro's landscape works were and remain a major influence on the appearance of landscape paintings in the Southwest. In 1990, the artist abandoned the focus on landscape and returned to a more abstract approach in his work. Many color and black and white paintings from this period are represented on this site. His style evolved again, incorporating newly discovered techniques for applying acrylic paint. Shaipiro defines this body of work as a metaphorical representation of a pre-matter state with different energetic structures at work – a new type of landscape.
