This magnificent 19th-century Russian icon depicts “Our Lady of Kazan”, one of the most venerated images of the Virgin Mary in the Russian Orthodox Church. The icon shows the Mother of God holding the Christ Child, both adorned with halos of sanctity. The Virgin is recognizable by her veil and red mantle, while the Child Jesus blesses with his right hand. The style is typical of Russian iconography, with expressive faces and hieratic poses.The oklad, or finely chiseled gilt brass covering, envelops the painted image, leaving only the faces and hands visible. This technique, known as "riza," is characteristic of Russian icons and symbolizes divine protection. The delicate motifs around the halo and on the frame demonstrate exquisite metalwork.
