Frenchman Frédéric Japy (1749-1812) was a pioneer not only of watches but of manufacturing in general, an innovator who created coffee grinders, typewriters, enamelware, kitchen utensils, office machines and much more. The Japy factory, established in the town of Beaucourt, revolutionized French watchmaking – the number of production steps and operations was cut in half, and all parts were assembled into a finished product in one place, production machines took over some of the manual work. Japy enameled dials have become the standard for most watch manufacturers both in France and abroad. in 1878 Japy was nominated for a Grand Prize for watchmaking. During World War II, the factory was liquidated.
