Lithophanie 1899 - 52 Size: 10 x 12 cm Bucolic scene: the young girl and the hunter A lithophane is a thin ceramic plate with a relief whose thickness varies from 1.5 to 4 mm. The porcelain is fired twice at a temperature of 1250°C. In normal lighting there is virtually no visible image, but a three-dimensional image is created when a light is placed behind it. Lithophanies became particularly popular in the mid-19th century. Placed in front of a candle, they served as a bedside lamp or were hung in front of a window.
