Superb and rare icon representing the Holy Face of Christ, iconographic subject also known under the name "Mandylion".It dates from the second half of the 19th century -- around 1880.
Its style and great finesse allow us to attribute it to the famous iconographic school of Moscow. This is where some of the greatest Russian iconographers of their time worked for centuries. Their works are today preserved in numerous museums around the world.
This icon is traditionally painted with tempera (egg yolk-based paint) in warm tones.
The halo of Christ and the background of the icon are richly gilded. The border is also decorated with polychrome geometric patterns in imitation of cloisiné enamels, very fashionable at that time.
The noble face of Christ invites contemplation and prayer.
Two angels surmount the composition and hold the Mandylion.
The icon is in very good original condition. Wear and tear, cracks and small restorations in the lower border.
