This rider commemorates the famous King Mansa Musa Kieta, who during his pilgrimage to Mecca distributed an impressive amount of gold, establishing his reputation as the richest man of his time. Many generations honor this king through these votive statuettes which were probably on an altar and received offerings. Our copy is distinguished by its age and the quality of its sculpture.
