Georges Alfred Émile Delplanque, born 13 July 1903 in Douai (Nord)1 and died 1999 in Ivry-sur-Seine2, was a French painter.
He painted easel paintings on the themes of the circus, Brittany and the Paris suburbs, as well as murals.
Biography
Georges Delplanque studied at the Douai School of Fine Arts from 1918 to 1923, and held his first exhibition in 1926 in his home town. A great admirer of Corot, he was held in high esteem by Douai painter and collector Henri Duhem.
In 1927, he was admitted to the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris, where he studied with the painters Lucien Simon and Louis-François Biloul3. The following year, he was awarded the Prix Gaudrier.
In 1929, he exhibited his paintings Nu (étude) and Rue de l'abreuvoir à Semur-en-Auxois3 at the Salon des artistes français.
In 1936, he married schoolteacher Marie Nicol1, who later became head of the Barbusse nursery school in Ivry-sur-Seine. In 1938, he painted murals at the Barbusse school. That same year, he moved to Ivry with his wife, where he lived for 22 years.
A friend of the sculptor Jean Graves and the painters Gustave Hervigo and Louis-Édouard Toulet, in 1954 he was one of the founders, along with Andrée Bordeaux-Le Pecq and Lilas-Bug, among other painters and sculptors, of the Salon Comparaisons.
Delplanque was then admitted, alongside Yves Brayer, to Lucien Simon's studio in Paris. He then moved to Evry and devoted himself mainly to "populist" suburban subjects and landscapes of Brittany; the theme of the circus, central to his work, then appeared.
Delplanque returned to learn the fresco technique in the studio of the painter Ducos de la Haille in 1941, to create several monumental works, primarily religious: the chapel of the Virgin in the church of Saint-Ferdinand (1942-1945), in Paris, the choir of the church of Sainte-Thérèse in Douai (1949) - praised by Pius XII: "this is truly religious art, tell this artist to continue! "He was also commissioned by Houillières to create a décor evoking the history of Douai at the Houillières management school in the Château de Lewarde: the first panel depicts Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Jean de Bologne and Jean Bellegambe painting the Anchin altarpiece.
The Musée de Douai owned his Return of the Miner, painted in the dressing rooms during the competition for the Prix de Rome in 1931, devoted to the theme of the return; the work was destroyed during the bombardment that burnt down the town's museum in 1940.
Works Douai, lycée de garçons: wall paintings, 1958, with Albert Bouquillon, Robert Bouquillon, Émile Morlaix and Binet. Gray, Baron-Martin museum: La Grève rose, 1976, oil on canvas, on deposit with the Fonds national d'Art contemporain.
Ivry-sur-Seine: Henri-Barbusse school complex, 1938. Maurice-Thorez School: Le Monde merveilleux, 1959, mural painting, no longer in existence.
Paris: Saint-Ferdinand-des-Ternes church, 1945.
