"Kabuto Helmet Ornament Called Maedate - Japan - Circa 1900"
KABUTO HELMET ORNAMENT called MAEDATE                
Japan, circa 1900
Brass, wood and pigments 
H. 33; L 41 cm
(slight accidents) 

Consisting of a double brass fin, this maedate is centred on a carved wooden demon, called an oni, enhanced with polychrome pigments. It has a large pair of horns with golden tips and long incisors, and its ears are cut to resemble bat wings. 
On the reverse, a hook is used to attach the maedate to the kabuto.
