"Gustave Dussart - Woman With Cats Or "the Unconscious", Bronze Sculpture Art Deco Period, 1910"
Elegant bronze representing a naked woman playing with two cats. She holds in her hand a heart which seems to have attracted the attention of one of the two cats, while the second plays with a second heart. Allegorical scene evoking love and the fact of "offering one's heart" without suspicion, hence the title "unconscious". Bronze work with brown patina in good condition. Old cast iron circa 1910. Art Deco period. Signature on the “Dussart” terrace. Red marble base. A student of Jean Leon Gérôme, Gustave Dussart exhibited at the Salon of French Artists from 1899 and obtained an honorable mention in 1909. He also took part in the Paris, Lyon and Lille Salons. His best-known works are the two groups which appear on the main facade of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, Le Secours and Le Progrès Coming to the Rescue of Humanity, inaugurated on February 25, 1903. Among his notable works is also the Bust of Colonel William Frederick Cody known as Buffalo Bill, made in 1897 and currently kept at the Musée du Nouveau Monde in La Rochelle.
