"Mahakala, Gilded Bronze, Nepal "
Mahakala, main protector of the Karma Kagyupa order, in mercury-gilded bronze in the tradition of Newar work in Nepal. We find his usual attributes, the kartrika in the right hand, a cleaver which symbolizes detachment and the kapala, the skull cup in his left hand. His legs in a dynamic position mark the determined action of his words, under his feet two naked human figures, at the back a mandorla of flame. Great finesse of execution where the meticulous chiseling reveals numerous details. Two small corals are set in its crown. Several removable elements. Acquired in the 1980s in the Kathmandu Valley, 19th/20th century. Very equivalent piece, of the same construction, recently sold for €3,750 at Lempertz Auction in Cologne, Germany, on 06/18/2024.
