Object description :

"Important Pyrogenic Lebanese Cedar Wedding Chest. Veneto 16th Century."
Splendid sixteenth-century chest in fragrant Lebanese wood typical of the upper Veneto and Friuli areas. The rich front is punctuated by three paintings carved and decorated with pyrography with landscapes and genre scenes and family commemorations and each is framed by ebonized guilloché frames. Each painting is marked by 4 figures, probably personifications of the 4 continents placed within rich tabernacles with trompe d'oeil apses, all dominated by games of winged cherubs and candelabras.

The same motifs are shown on the surface which has two large allegorical panels, while the central part is finely decorated in pyrography with apotropaic masks, family coats of arms (to be studied), grotesque decorations, vegetal spirals and phytoform elements.

Furthermore, this piece of furniture preserves a rich decoration under the top with a depiction of two swordsmen facing each other with an elegant circular decoration with heraldic elements in the centre. The sides are probably decorated in the same way. with profane scenes given that they are equipped with ancient wrought iron handles with depictions. by Memento Mori.

The measurements of this chest are 57 x 52 x 155 cm.

Similar examples of this rare Renaissance artefact are preserved in important public collections such as the Civic Collections of Applied Art at the Sforzesco Castle in Milan or the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

We attach a certificate of authenticity to the sale.
