"Chiffonniere Stamped Cc Saunier (1735-1807) 18th Century "
Superb Louis XVI Chiffonniere, Stamped Claude Charles SAUNIER, 18th Century Period. It is in Satin Marquetry in Amaranth frames. It opens on the front with 2 drawers which close with a key. Its White Marble Top is surrounded by an openwork Gallery in Gilt Bronze. It rests on 4 spindle feet ending in gilt bronze sabots and connected by a satin marquetry spacer in an amaranth frame, as a reminder of the facade and the two sides. The Uprights have simulated grooves. It is in very good condition. It measures 44 CM in length, 34 CM in width and 72 CM in height. SAUNIER Claude Charles Claude Charles Saunier (1735-1807) – cabinetmaker - mastery obtained on July 31, 1752: Famous Parisian cabinetmaker under Louis XVI, man of invention and taste, Saunier is distinguished by the very fine quality of his stamped works. Coming from a family of cabinetmakers, Saunier began his career in the family workshop with his father Jean-Charles, rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, opposite rue Saint-Nicolas. He succeeded him in 1765 and immediately recorded his master's degrees - received at the age of seventeen in 1752. After taking over the factory, his reputation spread very quickly, not only in France but also in abroad, for example in London. He worked for the merchant-merchant Daguerre, whose clients included major English collectors like Lord Spencer. If under the reins of his father, Saunier participated in the manufacture of furniture with curved shapes and rocaille decorations, it is a taste considerably evolved in favor of a more sober style inspired by Antiquity that we find under his direction. Still young, Saunier adopted new ideas. Apart from a few Louis XV works, of very good quality but without real originality if we compare them to those of his colleagues, his production is essentially characterized by Transition style furniture and Louis XVI Furniture. In each of these categories, he creates very characteristic types of furniture that are recognizable even in the absence of his stamp. If Saunier was not in demand at the court or the great ones of the kingdom, he did, however, embody the taste of Parisian amateurs for rigor, sobriety and balance of form. These specific qualities present him as one of the best cabinetmakers of the reign of Louis XVI. For his furniture, Saunier prefers solid wood, inlaid with simple fillets. If he widely uses mahogany, after rosewood and satin, his veneers ultimately display a predominance of native wood species such as lemon tree which he uses on large surfaces to highlight its luminosity. Saunier also readily displays a taste for contrasts, visible in the amaranth frames or ebony fillets lined with bronze rods - but he always uses them with restraint, to say the least.
