The Matterhorn (in German: Matterhorn, in Italian: Cervino) is, at its altitude of 4,478 meters, the 12th summit of the Alps. It is located on the Italian-Swiss border, between the canton of Valais and the Aosta Valley. It overlooks the Swiss city of Zermatt to the northeast and the Italian city of Breuil-Cervinia to the south. It connects the Zermatt valley and Valtournenche, in the Aosta Valley, via the Saint-Théodule pass, to the east. The Matterhorn is the best-known mountain in Switzerland, particularly for the pyramidal appearance it offers from the town of Zermatt, in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais. His image is regularly used for the logos of brands such as Toblerone or Ricola. The ascent over the Hörnli ridge on July 14, 1865 is considered the last of the great feats of mountaineering in the Alps. But this ascent, carried out under the leadership of Edward Whymper, ended, at the start of the descent, with the death of four of the seven members of the victorious rope party. Its north face is one of the three major north faces of the Alps with those of the Eiger and the Grandes Jorasses.
