"Russian Orthodox Icon Hsp Dormition Virgin Mary Mother God Apostles XVIII"
Russian Orthodox icon (oil on panel) representing the Scene of the Dormition* of the Virgin Mary, with in the center the Mother of God lying down, asleep in death, surrounded by the Apostles, above her Christ in Glory with the soul of the Virgin on her left arm, from South Russia, vintage late 18th century. This icon is in good general condition, in its original state. The panel is slightly curved. Please note: some accidents and lack of paint, dirt and wear over time, look carefully at the photos. * The term Dormition is used, in Christian vocabulary, to designate the death of saints and the pious faithful when it is not a violent death. This term applies more particularly to the death of Mary, Mother of Jesus. The Dormition of the Mother of God is often called simply Dormition because it is the Dormition par excellence. The Eastern Churches have kept this ancient name in the form of The Dormition of the Theotokos (the Mother of God). They thus hear the death of the Virgin Mary and the ascent to heaven of her body. The Feast of the Dormition is the most important of the feasts of the Virgin Mary, one of the Twelve Great Feasts, and it is she who closes the liturgical year of the Byzantine rite. As with Catholics, it takes place on August 15. Dimensions: 37.3 cm x 31.6 cm Reference: D30 155 All photos are on: www.antiques-delaval.com
