Introduced to the Court of Versailles in 1788, where he became a designer and painter for the Cabinet of Queen Marie-Antoinette. Ten years later, he was the official painter of Joséphine de Beauharnais. Well known for his botanical plates, he gave drawing lessons at the Paris Natural History Museum at the beginning of the 19th century. Today buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery.
