"Dogon Horseman Mali"
Superb Dogon rider from Mali. The horseman statues among the Dogons represent the ancient revered chiefs, who were the only ones to own a horse, these statues attracted their protection for a village or a rich family. This has a rich dark, dry, slightly crusty patina, the wood is worn and attests to its age (probably late 19th or early 20th). The whole is harmonious, finely carved in a very hard and heavy wood, the rider seems to be taking a weapon from his quiver, the statue is in good general condition, some wear and stains, but no lack. Height 58 cm. Note its beautiful stylized and minimalist shape, a superb work of art from my personal collection that fits into all styles, classic or very modern!
