Old French cartel from the Louis XV period, 18th century. Completely intact clock, breathtakingly beautiful, in excellent condition with original pendulum. The dial has not been restored, the gilding is in perfect original condition. The fire-gilded bronze envelope is topped with an arched arcade openwork with a foliage crown. Patterns of upturned leaves are visible to the left and right of the dial. The original pendulum behind the glass is visible under the dial. The watch is protected on the side with red fabric. The leaves end in very curly leaves and the curls end in branches. The clock is characterized by its rich rococo style leaf figures. Spring clock with anchor handle with 8 day operating time, pendulum wire suspension. Double bell repeater.
Signed on the dial and movement by “Thiout à Paris”. The image and description can be found in the book Tary Part 1 on page 192. The signature can be found in the Tardy Dictinonnaire de l'Horloge on page 611. Antoine Thiout, known as the Elder (1694-1767). Associate in Paris and 1715, master 1724. Visitor on duty from 1742 to 1745, Watchmaker to the Queen Dowager of Spain, then Ordinary Watchmaker to the Duke of Orléans 1752. Foundation of the Enclos de la Trinité, then Rue du Four, then Quai Pelletier. This brilliant watchmaker presented numerous inventions to the Academy of Sciences, including the comparison of time and nautical clocks. He also made tools, including fuse forming machines. In 1741, he published his important Traité d'Horlogerie, a book that is still considered one of the most modern horological conventions.
