While the 19th century reread the styles of the past in a never-sated historicism, fans of the young Louis XIV style immersed themselves in the marquetry of Pierre Gole. This cabinetmaker had his hour of glory at the start of the reign of the Sun King with his black furniture decorated with fine marquetry forming bouquets and plant motifs full of life.
In the middle of the 19th century, the Alsatian Charles Hunsinger (1823 - 1893) took up this virtuoso technique by setting up around 1859 as a manufacturer of luxury and fancy furniture. Quickly recognized and renowned for his talent, he participated in the Parisian exhibitions of 1865, 1867, 1878 and 1889. He obtained a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1878 and a gold medal in Brussels in 1881. He will have, in Paris, several stores throughout his career. One of his cabinets in blackened lime tree and marquetry dated 1879 is preserved in the reserves of the Musée d’Orsay.
