French School of the 18th century, large portrait - oil on canvas - of a gentleman naval officer. He is dressed in a blue jacket embroidered with gold over a red waistcoat, shirt with tie and fine lace cuffs). He wears a powdered wig and holds in his left hand a sextant placed on a marble table (a reflective maritime navigation instrument used to measure the angular distance between two points). Given the richness of his clothing, our aristocrat is probably of high birth, but unfortunately not identified to date. Louis XV period around 1750. The painting is in good condition, no repainting on the face, on its original canvas in a beautiful Louis gilder. The painting is on its original canvas, not re-canvased.
