"Allegory Of Fortune, Oil On Canvas Late 17th, Early 18th Century."
Oil on canvas depicting an unusual representation of the goddess of fortune, personified by a long-haired woman astride a terrestrial globe in the act of covering her eyes with one hand, as if blindfolding herself, while with the other she turns it backwards towards her dangling a pearl necklace. All around is a procession of graceful cherubs following her, one blindfolded and all holding something in their hands, ears of wheat, acanthus leaves and the one in front is holding a serpentine-shaped animal in his hand.
The painting is in first canvas condition and probably never restored or cleaned.
It is possible that it was painted by a painter of the Roman school between the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth century. The painting is very particular, and deserves a more in-depth study from an ionic point of view, due to the numerous symbols it offers.
The Salvator Rosa frame on which it mounts is gilded and from the 18th century.
Canvas measures 29cm x 40cm H/ Measures with frame 41cm x 59cm.
