Etruscan art, 3rd / 2nd century BC
Terracotta, hollow, with a circular vent hole at the back of the head
Height of 30 cm
Good state of conservation , with some superficial cracks and scratches (typical of votive heads of this period)
The head is sculpted in the round, with the rear relatively flat.
The vent hole on the back allowed air to escape, preventing bubbles from forming and breaking the piece during cooking.
The facial features are stylized but distinct: almond-shaped eyes, straight nose and closed lips.
The hair is meticulously worked, composed of wavy locks framing the face, typical of Etruscan representations of the time.
The surface shows marks of manual finishing, with stylized and simplified details. Ex-votos, like this head, show a simplification of features and stylization that differ from Greek idealization.
Similar pieces have been found at various Etruscan sites, such as those at Cerveteri and Tarquinia, offering insights into the religious practices and artistic techniques of this civilization.
