The theme of the Annunciation is central to the Christian tradition: it is the moment in which the Virgin Mary gives her free assent to God so that the divine providential work can be accomplished through her. The painting follows the traditional iconographic scheme of the Annunciation: the angel on the left and the Madonna on the right. In this painting there are many elements full of symbolism, typical of the Christian tradition. The archangel Gabriel is portrayed with the classic pose, i.e. at the moment of landing, with his wings folded. Instead of having peacock wings, the messenger has real bird wings. Finally, the angel blesses Mary with his right hand, while with her left hand he holds out her lily, a symbol of chastity and purity. The Madonna is kneeling and separated from the Angel. Respecting the Christian iconographic tradition, Mary wears a red dress, as a symbol of her divine nature, and a blue mantle, a sign of celestial life.
