“The village of Ota in Corsica”
Oil on cardboard,
Signed and located lower right,
Beautiful work with strong contrast by the Corsican painter born in Bastia Louis Ferdinand Antoni which represents a view of the village of Ota in Southern Corsica. Located a short distance from the coastal village of Porto, the village of Ota is located in the mountains at the foot of Mount Capu.
We can notably distinguish the Saint Jean-Baptiste church in the village.
The artist was able to perfectly transcribe the atmosphere of the place by playing on the color nuances of the facades and the contrasts.
Best known for his orientalist works, Louis Antoni offers us here a rare view of Corsica.
Originally from Bastia, Louis Antoni moved to Algeria at a young age with his parents and entered the Algiers School of Fine Arts under the direction of the painter Hippolyte Dubois. In 1892, he obtained a scholarship allowing him to study in Paris in the studio of Léon Bonnat.

In 1909, he won a travel grant to French West Africa. He brought back numerous works from his trip.
In 1912, he was appointed professor of decorative arts at the School of Fine Arts in Algiers.
