He attended the School of Fine Arts in Lyon. After the war spent in a labor camp in Austria, where he painted in the rare moments of freedom, he showed his studies and drawings to Alexandre Garbell, who encouraged him to continue. Having little means of subsistence, he accepts a job with the potters of Vallauris. His first exhibition took place in 1946 at the Galerie Michaux in Paris. He knows Picasso who encourages him. At the Salon des Moins de Trente Ans in 1947 he exhibited a View of the Place d'Ivry and in 1948 Notre Dame de Paris. In 1950, 1951, and from 1951 to 1961 he participated in the Salon de la Jeune Peinture. He greatly admires the work of Bonnard, Marquet, Pougny, Soutine, Derain and de Staël. In 1949 he won a scholarship at the Prix National de Peinture; in 1950 he was awarded a prize at the Menton Biennial and in 1953 he received the Fénéon First Prize, ex-aequo with Jean Fusaro. The same year he signed a contract with the Galerie Art Vivant in Paris which organized several solo exhibitions for him.
He paints nudes, landscapes inspired by Tuscany and the Alps, views of Lyon and beaches with thick and full-bodied material. Since 1964 he has exhibited at the Parisian Salons: Tuileries, de Mai, Comparaison, Automne.
He was also present at the Ecole de Paris exhibitions, organized by the Galerie Charpentier from 1961 to 1963.
He is a skilled illustrator of literary works, including Dialogue de l'arbre by Paul Valéry in 1964 and L'Odysée by Kazantzakis in 1968. The same year, the birth of a son inspired him with more intimate scenes. Cottoz's manner is characterized by the use of pastes in earthy colours, which fits perfectly into the tradition of the Lyonnais school.
In 1989 the Galerie Taménaga in Paris organized the exhibition “Cottoz, visages” followed by another solo exhibition in 1991.
He began a collaboration with various galleries, in particular with Tamenaga who, interested in his works, took him under contract for his galleries in Japan. Success was assured as he created a painting “View of Mount Fujiyama” measuring five by five meters. André Cottoz's works are presented in numerous museums or exhibitions, in France or abroad and make him a recognized artist.
