A very beautiful nymph, Daphne is pursued by the God Apollo, made madly in love when he was hit by the arrows fired by Eros. For her part, Daphne, struck by a lead arrow which inspires in her disgust for love, flees the desire for God.
Exhausted by these efforts, Daphne implores her father Peneus, the river god of Thessaly, to come to her aid: he metamorphoses her into a laurel tree.
In this engraving, as in many works illustrating this myth, Daphne is presented at the moment when Apollo joins her and where her metamorphosis is manifested by the appearance of the first leaves and branches of laurel.
