"Carved Buffalo Skull."
The water buffalo is an imposing animal used in Asia as a domesticated animal, both for milk but especially for pulling carts or plowing. It is an animal with great strength, and which spends a lot of time in water, hence its name Swamp Buffalo. The Bubalus Bubalis is of course perfectly adapted to rice cultivation. There are only around 3,500 individuals left in the wild. This animal can have imposing horns, and it is both venerated, but also sacrificed during burial ceremonies, which sometimes take place several years after the death of the person: the time to raise the money for 1 or more buffaloes. The skulls are kept and used to adorn the pediments of traditional houses throughout Indonesia. Today the sculpted patterns are also inspired by tattoo patterns. This is the case for this one. Good condition. Dimensions: 58cm x 44cm.
