"Great Winged War Mace"
This winged weapon mace is impressive in its size and weight. It is undoubtedly old, but it is difficult to give it a precise date. I will risk a possible attribution to the second half of the 17th century, in a rather Hungarian tradition, although the shape of the wings of the head is entirely comparable to that of the Mamelukes' masses.Regardless, to be prudent I am guaranteeing the item as dating at least from the 19th century, but probably older.
The head of the Mace is made of steel, it is made up of 8 large fins which stand out from the center. This head is hollow, and the wooden handle goes right through it. At the top there is a knob that is probably screwed deep into the wood of the handle.
Diameter of the head = 11 cm, Height of the head without the button = approximately 14 cm
The handle: it is made of twisted ash, and has a beautiful, old patina. It is decorated at the hilt with a flower-shaped collar, cut from the mass of the wood. The wood then continues to the pommel.
A thick iron guard, cut in the shape of a flower with 12 petals, protects the hand.
The grip is protected by leather on a string, which has hardened over time.
The mace ends with a large bulb-shaped iron pommel, decorated in a rather rustic way with hatched bands.
This massive pommel is obviously intended to bring the balance of the weapon towards the handle. It also allows hitting with this end opposite the wings.
It is an interesting weapon, because it is different from the most well-known models. It was probably designed for a fairly athletic character, since the total weight of the weapon is 2.5 kgs. The balance point, however, is approximately in the middle of the weapon: 38 cm from the end of the pommel and 31 cm from the outer end of the head.
