"Jacques Truphémus (1922-2017) "ostend Beach""
Jacques Truphémus (1922-2017) - "the beach of Ostend" - oil on panel - signed and dated 1966 lower right - black American box in good condition - Jacques Truphémus was born on October 25, 1922 in Grenoble. As a teenager, he spent his days at the Grenoble museum, where he discovered the world of art. Nothing distracts him from his passion, particularly for Matisse, Bonnard, Zurbaran and Rubens, whom he studies with avidity. Immersed in this world that he loves and which enriches him, at the age of 15 he painted his first canvas representing Notre Dame Cathedral in Grenoble... During the international exhibition in Paris, he was in shock when he discovered Guernica by Picasso. It was therefore quite natural that he joined the Beaux Arts in 1941 where his teachers were Chancrin, Laplace, Chartres and Vieilly. There he met Cottavoz, Fusaro, Coquet, Mouriquand and Philibert Chavrin who would be his friends throughout his professional life. He thrives on reading and devours everything that can be a source of inspiration, helping him to satisfy his passion. Unfortunately, during the Second World War, he was requisitioned for compulsory labor service (STO), a very dark period during which his health was put to the test. In 1945, he returned to the Beaux Arts where he completed his studies in the Class of Antoine Chartres. In 1947, he worked in Paris as a night watchman, an obligation solely for food, and sometimes drew at the Grande Chaumière. Back in Lyon after this difficult year, he exhibited at the Salon des Trentes ans as well as at the Salon du Sud-Ouest. Then he took part in an exhibition at the chapel of the Lycée Ampère in Lyon where fourteen of them were exhibiting, with his friends from the Beaux Arts. Together, they gave birth to a new movement: Sanzism... sansism as opposed to cubism, realism, pointillism, impressionism and other fauvism... an expression simply invented by Charrin to attract the attention of visitors... and it was successful... He married Aimée in 1950 and lived in Lyon where he took over the studio of the painter Etienne Morillon. Hardworking and rigorous in his pictorial approach, he became known to gallery owners who quickly trusted him. They then exhibited it regularly, notably the Galerie Claude Bernard which represented it in Paris. The friendships he established with them allowed him to evolve quickly in the artistic world and therefore, to make a full living from his painting.
