Object description :

"19th French School, Circle Of Adolphe Monticelli, Oil On Wood"
French School, Circle of Adolphe Monticelli, second half of the 19th century around 1860. Oil on wooden panel. Illegible signature on the back. Traces of an old French label. Original wooden frame and golden tablet.

This delightful interior scene is animated by numerous characters dressed in 18th century French fashion, sitting around the table in a sumptuous hall illuminated by a large crystal chandelier. The dense brushstrokes, the barely sketched details, the rocaille-inspired scene lead us to a painter belonging to the circle of Adolphe Monticelli.

An artist from an Italian family, Milanese in particular, Adolphe Monticelli was born in 1824 in Marseille, where he attended the local academy, before deciding to move to Paris to the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts, becoming a pupil of Paul Delaroche.
When in 1855 he met Narcisse Diaz, a member of the Barbizon school, he joined this group of painters who loved to leave their studios to paint outdoors, in front of the natural model, which allowed him to find sincere inspiration, according to the lines that, a few years later, would lead to the impressionist phenomenon.
Author of fantastic themes and gallant scenes illuminated by vibrant touches of light, Monticelli developed a real predilection for ladies and knights, linked in places derived from rocaille and dominated by a profound elegance.
Contrary to academic precepts, he painted with bold brushstrokes, rebelling against the usual smooth precision, he loved to play with color, using it in various gradations within a single painting, using these techniques to create romantic scenes and landscapes of parks and gardens bathed in light , without preparatory drawings, with a personal and lively way of dense and sketchy brushstrokes, inspired by some sketches by Eugène Delacroix.
Belonging to the generation immediately preceding the Impressionists, he was greatly admired by Van Gogh, to the point of becoming one of his points of reference.
After 1870, Monticelli returned to Marseille, where he lived in poverty despite a vast and interesting production. A move that cost the painter a lot, given that it would have only taken him a few years, still in Paris, to make his way in the new impressionist market and begin to enjoy deserved success.

Excellent state of preservation.
