"Large Sculpture Of Saint Catherine In Golden Wood, 18th Century "
Superb and large sculpture of Saint Catherine from the 18th century in gilded wood. It is presented on a Turkish colored base on which is indicated "Ste CATHERINE". Saint Catherine of Alexandria, better known as Saint Catherine, is a virgin and martyr who lived at the beginning of the 4th century. She is also one of the six megalomartyr saints of the Greek Orthodox Church. She is the patroness of girls' schools and philosophy students, and she is often depicted leaning on a half-broken and blood-stained wheel. The latter is entirely dressed in a tunic, all finely covered with gilding. The face has a good expression, she holds a palm in her right hand and is wearing a crown. High quality work in excellent condition.
