"Netsuke - Gama Sennin With Toad - 18th Century - Wood"
Superb wooden netsuke representing Gama Sennin holding his staff in his right hand, and his magic toad in his left hand.

“The Hermit and the Toad” Gama sennin is the Japanese adaptation of “Liu Hai”, one of the eight Chinese immortals. Living as a recluse in the mountains, he was known for his skills in alchemy. Its legend tells that after rescuing a magical three-legged toad, the latter grants him incredible powers, such as the ability to fly.

Japan, 18th century.
Note the finesse of the facial expression and the very beautiful patina of use.
Traces of restorations on the right foot, and missing at the lower end of the hermit's staff.
