"Empire Period Office Armchair - Stamped Jean-pierre Louis - Early 19th Century"
Empire period office armchair, in solid mahogany wood. The seat and back are made of a red and black silk fabric trimmed, probably remade in the 20th century. The rear legs are sabred and the front legs have balusters. It is decorated with palmettes and floral motifs reminiscent of the Corinthian order.Stamped J.Louis under the belt, for Jean-Pierre Louis, cabinetmaker received master on September 5, 1787. He regularly provided the Imperial Administration with numerous seats for ministers and grand officers of the Crown. During the reign of Louis XVIII, he was employed by the Duke of Bourbon. This armchair was probably ordered for the Tuileries or Fontainebleau castle by the emperor.
The State collections contain some of his seats. We see other armchairs bearing the same brand at the Palace of Fontainebleau and in the small apartments of the Château de Chantilly.
