Object description :

"Exposed Levers, Sectional Comb 4 Melody Music Box"
Antique and exceptional Ducommun Girod music box with "exposed controls" Ducommun Girod was one of the first music box manufacturers in the early 19th century. He is known for his fine arrangements and his very refined music boxes. This music box plays 4 melodies as they appear on the original melody card. The comb is made up of sections (19 sections of 4 teeth and 1 section of 5 teeth). Until about 1840 it was not possible to construct a comb from a single section. The polished base plate bears the serial number (4981) (left under the comb) and the signature "Ducommun Girod" (also on the comb). The case is made of simple fruit wood, which is typical of the period. It has a beautiful patina. At the bottom of the case is the serial number. On the original melodic map, we find pieces from "la Muette de Portici" and "Guillaume Tell", among others. The first music boxes may not have been the most beautiful, but they were undoubtedly the rarest and of the highest musical quality.
