"Workshop Of Giovanni Battista Salvi, Known As Sassoferrato (1609-1685), Holy Family"
Workshop of Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato (1609-1685)
Holy family with allegory of the Redemption
Oil on canvas, cm 143 x 136,5

The painting presented here reproduces the composition of the work executed by Pierre Mignard in Rome in 1655 and immediately engraved on site by François de Poilly; part of a group of three classical Madonnas called the "Mignardes" that were widely spread especially through the press and through copies of Sassoferrato, as clarified by J.C. Boyer and F. Macè de Lépinay ( "The Mignardes, Sassoferrato and Roman classicism During the 1650’s", in "The Burlington Magazine", CXXIII, Feb. pp. 69-76).
Of this in particular the original could be the one very damaged in the Museum of Rouen. Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato, liked the composition so much that he himself reworked two versions of it; one preserved in the Staatsgalerie of Stuttgart and the other in the Marian College of Indianapolis. The subject of the Holy Family is enriched by symbols of Redemption: watching over the progress of evil on the world symbolized by the serpent with the apple creeping on the globe; in the center of the scene, the Child Jesus indicates the serpent, while Saint Joseph explains to the Son of God that the redemption of the world will come from his sacrifice on the Holy Cross.. The illuminated copy of the Uffizi also testifies to the success of the work, the apex of the Italian period (1635-1656) of the artist. It is documented at Poggio Imperiale at least in 1836 and 1845 and is probably of Medici origin.
The painting characterized by the excellent quality of its workmanship, the delicacy of the complexions, the play of light and the sweetness of the colors is the work of an exponent of the Workshop of Giovanni Battista Salvi, who, as already mentioned, will particularly love the compositions of Mignard; whose sweet Madonnas lend themselves well to the elaboration of the ways of Sassoferrato.
Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato from the name of his native town in the Marche region, was born on 25 August 1609. His artistic training began in the workshop of his father Tarquinio, also a painter, and then continued in Rome under the guidance of the Bolognese master Domenichino, a pupil of Annibale Carracci.
The art of Sassoferrato is influenced by various influences, including those of Raphael, Guido Reni and Francesco Albani. His style is characterized by the expressive sweetness, the delicacy of the colors and the softness of the shades, elements that made him particularly appreciated for his Madonnas, characterized by an unparalleled grace and devotion. After a period of youth in Perugia, where he worked at the Benedictine monastery of San Pietro, Sassoferrato moved to Rome in 1641. Here he achieved great success, receiving numerous commissions from important ecclesiastical and noble personalities. Among his most famous works we remember the "Madonna del Rosario" (1643), the "Madonna col Bambino e Sant'Anna" (1648) and the "Ecce Homo" (1660).
Sassoferrato died in Rome on 8 August 1685, leaving an artistic legacy of great value. His works, characterized by a serene and spiritual beauty, continued to be admired and collected for centuries, influencing generations of subsequent artists.
