"Follower Of Alessandro Varotari Known As Il Padovanino, Madonna And Child "
Follower of Alessandro Varotari known as il Padovanino (Padua, 1588 - Venice, 1649)
Madonna and Child and Saint Anthony of Padua
Oil on copper, cm 19 x 23
With frame, cm 34 x 37,5

The work, an oil on copper inserted in an elegant golden frame that highlights the bright colors, is attributable to stylistic and formal characteristics to the hand of an artist gravitating around the figure of Alessandro Varotari called Il Padovanino (Padua, 1588 - Venice, 1649).
An Italian Baroque painter born in Padua, Padovanino is considered one of the main exponents of the seventeenth-century Venetian painting school. The sources allude to an initial training with his father Dario, a well-known architect and painter of Veronesian culture, although this is highly questionable, as he died around 1596-1597, when Alessandro was still a child. Recent studies suggest an artistic education received without doubt in a circle of knowledge revolving around the family, probably former collaborators of his father’s workshop. During the first phase of his artistic career he worked in his native city, especially for the Church of the Hermits, for the School of the Holy Spirit and for the Cathedral of Padua, clearly showing its remoteness from the late-Catholic ways and its adherence to the language of Titian (who knew when the master was at the Scuola del Santo) and to the new themes of Venetian painting of the sixteenth century. In 1614 Padovanino moved to Venice, where he was enrolled in the Fraglia dei Pittori from 1615 to 1639. After 1614 he made a study trip to Rome, coming into contact with the artistic novelties of the Carracci family.
There are numerous dated works, which allow you to verify with a certain consistency the path of the artist, always faithful to the style of Titian, in which grafts the architectural plant derived from Veronese and the renewed adherence to the pictorial language of the contemporary works of Palma il Giovane.
The copper in question depicts a Madonna with Child and Saint Anthony of Padua, here depicted according to the traditional iconography of a young saint with the Franciscan habit. Essential element is the lily, here supported not by the saint, but by the child Jesus himself as a symbol of purity and chastity; the extreme tenderness and closeness between the two alludes, moreover, to the vision that Saint Anthony had in Camposampiero shortly before dying. The Madonnas of Padovanino are often depicted in a heavenly environment, surrounded by angels or saints, while the Child is usually portrayed in the arms of his mother in an affectionate pose.
The copper artist is, therefore, a master in capturing light and its influence on the scene, creating a vibrant atmosphere capable of evoking a sense of devotion and spirituality. The bright shades and bold color combinations of primary colors give a strong visual impact. Known for its formal elegance, the refined use of color and the ability to represent sacred and secular subjects with grace and composure, Padovanino influenced many artists, including Sebastiano Ricci and Giambattista Piazzetta.
