Nicola Levoli (Rimini, 1728 - 1801)
Couple of still lifes with vegetables in a kitchen interior
(2) Oil on canvas cm 71,5 x 108
With frame, cm 80 x 117

The pendant in question, two oils on canvas in a horizontal format depicting a pair of still lifes with vegetables in a kitchen interior, can be traced back to the hand of the Emilian painter Nicola Levoli (Rimini, 1728 - 1801). Born in Rimini in 1728 with the name of Remigio Enrico Policarpo by his father Giacomo Nicola Policarpo, surgeon, and Anna Alda Maddalena Sarzetti, with the name of Remigio Enrico Policarpo, In 1747 he was initiated into the monastic life of the Augustinian monastery of San Giacomo Maggiore in Bologna, taking, the following year, the solemn vows and assuming the name, with which he is known, of Nicholas. Always passionate about painting, however, in 1762 he decided to enroll at the Accademia Clementina in Bologna, where he was a student of Ubaldo Gandolfi, director of the Academy from 1761. In 1765 he won a competition for the painting of flowers, collaborating with the master on some paintings always of floral character. During his career Levoli also painted some altarpieces and sacred works, now lost. In 1769, he became associated with the convent of Sant'Agostino in Rimini, where he lived until the suppression of 1797 after the French occupation. He was sent to the Convent of the Minor Observants, where he remained until his death in 1801.
Nicola Levoli, whose art has been the subject of a recent revaluation, is known, however, especially for his works of still lifes, which are characterized in most cases as domestic and poetic compositions of fish of the Adriatic and other things eaten. His works are dominated by a full-bodied and material brushwork, where a marked sensitivity towards a true realism emerges, as well as absolute precision and attention to detail. His compositions stand out for their harmonious and balanced appearance, where nothing is left to chance and, indeed, there is a refined use of light and shadows to create a sense of depth and dimension.
The couple in question presents a simple and essential composition, with a few objects arranged on a plan and a profusion of vegetables, its main subjects along with fruit, bread, cheese, fish and meat. Precise and meticulous, the two paintings reflect his careful observation of reality, rendered with warm, sober and harmonious colors. Appreciated for their beauty and for their historical value, they offer us a precious testimony of everyday life in 18th century Italy.
Many important collections have works by this artist, such as the Museum of the city of Rimini, his native city.
