Very original oil on canvas measuring 50cm x 61cm (formerly re-canvased) plus carved wooden frame 72cm x 83cm signed lower right Augustin CARRERA was born in Spain in 1878, died in Paris in 1952 He is one of the most important painters of his generation having worked in Marseille and Provence Born of French parents, he was a student of Alphonse Moutte in Marseille, then of Léon Bonnat and Henri Martin in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1904 to 1936. He received an honorable mention and a travel grant in 1907 as well as a silver medal in 1933. Furthermore, he received a Gold medal at the Exhibition. International in 1937. The Drouet gallery devoted an exhibition to him in 1910. He was the author of decorative panels for the Ministry of Colonies and two ceilings for the Marseille Opera in 1924. Finally, he was made a knight of the Legion of Honorary in 1920 and officer in 1928. The Cantini museum in Marseille keeps three works by this artist as well as the Augustins museum in Toulouse. The painting that I present to you is incredibly modern. The artist wanted to represent a rainbow in the port of Marseille (an extremely rare subject) with touches of color barely brushed on the canvas, bordering on abstraction.
