"Efu No Tachi With Bone Mount. Japan 19th"
This Japanese sword is an Efu no Tachi due to its mount.
Tachi = This is the court saber carried edge downwards, and supported by two rings
Efu no Tachi = Tachi with a metal mount, the handle and the scabbard do not have any part covered with silkas opposed to the Ito Maki no Tachi (Ito = silk, Maki = surrounded) whose handle is braided, as is the upper part of the sheath.
The mount of this saber is made of carved bone, it is a typical work of the Meiji period (1868-1911) We can therefore date it from the last quarter of the 19th century.
BLADE: this is not the strong point of this weapon, which is a court weapon. However, it has been made with care and presents the traditional shape in Shinogi-tzukuri (diamond section, around the "shinogi" edges), and Iori Mune (back of the 2-sided blade). The point is interesting since it is a long point, or O kissaki, with a clearly visible Yokote.
A manufacturing and polishing effort was therefore made for this blade. The temper line is only an effect of polishing, a type of "Keisho" which simulates a straight Sugu Ha type temper.
Dimensions for specialists Nagasa = 41 cm (so wakizashi type blade) Moto Haba = 23.4 mm, Saki Haba = 17.2 mm, Moto kasane = 4.6 mm, Saki Kasane = 3.5 mm
The brass habaki joins the blade with the handle
TSUBA: It is made of Sentoku leaf, Japanese brass, and is surrounded on either side by Seppa (oval washers) also made of brass
HANDLE or TSUKA: it is made of chiseled bone, like the rest of the mount with a setting depicting characters in court costume at the foot of a fortress. Fuchi, Kabuto Gane, and intermediate piece of the handle are decorated with the Mon (= coat of arms) of the Tokugawa shogun: 3 Aoï leaves  in a circle.
SCABBARD or SAYA: it is made of chiseled bone, with an abundant decoration of characters in court costume, but also two samurai in armor, at the foot of a fortress. Perhaps an allusion to the famous Japanese drama “The Revenge of the 2 Soga Brothers”?
All the metal elements of the scabbard are made of sentoku, and all bear the Mon (= coat of arms) of the Tokugawa clan.

What is pleasant about this weapon is that its condition is excellent, whereas frequently the examples of this type of tachi that have reached us are very damaged.
