Democratic Republic of Congo, Yombe people, first half of the 20th century, very pretty carved wooden sculpture depicting a mother and her child. This idealized image of a mother and child is a universal representation. Among the Yombe this representation called "Pfemba", symbol of dignity, is an affirmation of the essential role of women in the kingdom. The mother is represented kneeling on a circular base and carrying her child on her legs, whose head and legs she supports. The chest with shell breasts has beautiful ritual scarifications, she wears a choker necklace, arm and forearm bracelets. Its characteristic headdress is directed towards the sky, the face presents a beautiful, timeless expression.
