Bronze plaquette from the beginning of the 17th century representing the Flight into Egypt, from a supposed series of 16 plaques illustrating the life and Passion of Christ, traditionally attributed to the workshop of the Augsburg goldsmith Mathäus Wallbaum (1554 - 1632). In fact the plaquettes were probably distributed separately and no complete series has been preserved; moreover, the compositions of the different plaquettes brought together in this pseudo-series are quite disparate and of unequal quality. The very beautiful composition of this Flight into Egypt is in fact reproduced on an engraving by Johann Sadeler after Maerten de Vos around 1580 (see photo).
Dimensions: 9.8 x 7.7 cm
