Biography:
Cornelis van Spaendonck (December 7, 1756 - December 22, 1839 Paris) was a Dutch painter from Tilburg. Spaendonck first worked with the artist Guillaume-Jacques Herreyns (1743-1827) in Antwerp, and in 1773 he moved to Paris to study and work with his brother, the floral painter Gérard van Spaendonck (1746-1822) .
From 1785 to 1800, Cornelis van Spaendonck directed the Sèvres porcelain factory. Due to the difficulties encountered as an administrator, he was relieved of his duties in 1800, but remained in Sèvres as a designer and artist until 1808. Mélanie de Comoléra was his student[1]. In 1789, Spaendonck became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts.
He painted throughout his life and exhibited his works in Parisian salons until 1833. Most of Spaendonck's works were created in oils and gouache, and he is remembered for his lush still lifes flowers. Among his paintings, we find subjects such as Flowers and Fruits, Vase of Flowers, Bouquet of Different Flowers, Garden Flowers, Basket of Flowers, etc. At the time of his death in 1840, there were 29 paintings in his studio, works which were sold at auction shortly afterwards.
