"Buddha, Bronze, Burma, 17th"
Ava style Jambupati Buddha, a style commonly referred to as “Nyaung Yan” because it began during the reign of King Nyaung Yan (1597-1606) during which artistic production was particularly fertile. It is a lost wax bronze cast in one piece. The crown is formed of distinctive leaves, the wings, on each side of the headband, are supported by the shoulders. The crown also has a tall central spire (jata). The Buddha is adorned with a wide necklace, heavy earrings fall from the lobes on his shoulders, jeweled bracelets complete the ensemble. These elements evoke nobility hence the term “Jambupati style” He is seated in meditation, in bhumiparsa-mudra, the left hand rests in the hollow of the thighs, palm upwards, the right hand touches the earth taking it as witness to his illumination, 2nd to 3rd Ava period, 17/18th
