Numerous layers of pigments still cover it, initially white but graying over time. These statues were kept in groups in sanctuaries and were taken out each year, cleaned, repigmented, decorated and honored with a great feast.
Note the beautiful work of the ventral scarifications, and on the top of the forehead.
Nigeria's Biafran Civil War devastated Igbo communities, lasting for over three years in the 1960s and resulting in the loss of over a million lives. This work is one of the thousands of objects exported to Europe and the United States during the conflict. It must date from the beginning of the last century.
