"Superb Fan Set In Rectangle 18th Century Representing The Council Of The Gods "
Superb 18th century rectangular fan representing the council of the gods. According to the work of Raphal, Raffaello Sanzio, says,; 1483–1520. This work represents the request of Eros, the god of love, so that Psyche, the woman with whom he is madly in love, can become immortal in order to marry him. He makes this request to Zeus who will bring together all the gods to make a vote which will ultimately prove favorable to Eros' request. ---- The Lodge of Psyche, executed by Raphael around 1516-1518, is located in the heart of the Villa of Agostino Chigi, famous banker of Popes Julius II and Leo X. It illustrates the main episodes of the myth of Psyche, inspired from The Golden Ass by Apuleius. Rich in symbolic meanings, it relates in a metaphorical way the love story of the patron and the obstacles he had to face to marry the woman he loved, and offers, in a second interpretation, the representation of an allegory of the redemption of the soul. Over the centuries the myth of Psyche has inspired many artistic creations. The Lodge of Psyche, one of the rooms of Villa Chigi, known today as Villa Farnesina, offers a wonderful example. Located near the Settimiana gate in the Trastevere district of Rome, the famous villa was built in 1505-1506 by the young Sienese architect Baldassare Peruzzi for the famous and extremely wealthy papal banker, Agostino Chigi. Devoted to pleasures and the arts, the residence, which then served as a true cultural center, was endowed by the owner's contemporaries with several nicknames flattering its beauty: "la villa delle delizie", "la villa delle mondanità", "il palazzo d’amore”’. During the numerous parties that Agostino Chigi gave, works of art were exhibited there, concerts were played, and scientific and philosophical debates were organized. Entirely decorated by Raphaël and his workshop, the Lodge of Psyche, whose frescoes relate the episodes of the ancient myth according to which the god Cupid fell in love with the young Psyche, presents multiple interests. Not only is it a new demonstration of the genius of Raphaël and his students, not only does it offer an extraordinary testimony to the plant varieties of the time, but above all, it relates in a metaphorical way the love story of the patron and the obstacles he had to face to marry the woman he loved, Francesca Ordeaschi. Executed in view of a decisive event in the banker's life, his marriage, these frescoes tell the story of the young mortal who dared to marry a god - a legend which overlaps with the personal history of Agostino Chigi and his marry.
