Preparatory Study of the Painting "The Roman Legions Crossing the Nile near Philae" painted in 1873 and presented at the Brussels Salon (see photo on the back).

Antoine Van Hammée, 1836-1903, Belgian painter of historical subjects and portraits. Orientalist. After studying at the Pitzemburg college, in his hometown of Mechelen, Antoine Van Hammée began his artistic training at the Mechelen Drawing Academy. He then enrolled in 1855 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels where he became a student of François-Joseph Navez and Félix Stappaerts. After a six-month trip to France and Italy, in 1864 he joined the workshop of Jean-François Portaels. In 1877, he became a professor at the Royal Academy of Brussels. The painter Lucien Wollès will be one of his students. He was the first curator of the Royal Museums of Art and History. His paintings mainly have historical scenes as subject, many of which borrow their themes from ancient Greece, Rome and Pompeii with also patriotic subjects, like two paintings which ensured the painter's notoriety: The Toast to the King (1878, Museum Royal Army in Brussels) and Van Campenhout Singing the Brabançonne at Cantoni (1880, Brussels City Museum). We also owe him a painting entitled Antony and Cleopatra Assistant to the Execution of the Plotters, dated 1866 and Mundus Romanus preserved at the Schaerbeek Museum. We can also cite A Palace Court in Ancient Rome (1877), Street Scene in Rome, Animated Bridge in North Africa and The Roman Legions Crossing the Nile near Philae (1873) of which our painting is a Preparatory Sketch. When he moved to Schaerbeek in 1865, he himself designed the facade of his house in Pompeian style. He died there on January 6, 1903. In 1905, the commune of Schaerbeek gave his name to one of its arteries and a commemorative plaque in his honor, affixed to the facade of 22 rue, at the intersection of Monrose Street. Artist listed at Bénézit, Arto and Piron, Coté Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc...
